Severstal-Metiz merges steel mesh operations
Wire-drawing and metal processing company Severstal-Metiz, a subsidiary of Russian steelmaker Severstal, will from 1 January group together the mesh manufacturing operations of its Cherepovets and Orel plants as well as its subsidiary Polycher into a single specialised enterprise, UniFence.
It is also planned, with the direct participation of UniFence, to develop the woven mesh section and to create a welded mesh section at Severstal-Metiz’s Ukrainian arm Dneprometiz.
By this amalgamation, Severstal-Metiz aims to significantly strengthen its position in the mesh markets of Russia and its neighbours, the company tells Steel Business Briefing.
Unifence, to be headed by former Polycher director Aleksei Pakhotin, will offer a wide range of welded, woven, corrugated and hexagonal mesh and mesh structures. Polycher’s main business is production and sales on the domestic and international markets of woven steel mesh.
Separately, Severstal-Metiz has fixed a 522.5m rouble ($19.9m) repairs programme for its Russian concerns for 2007. At the company’s Cherepovets plant, expenditure on repairs is provisionally set at 311.7m roubles, similar to the figure for 2006.
