Ukraine Imposes Duty on Russian Steel Rope
Ukraine's Economy Ministry will impose a 32.63% import duty on Russian-made steel rope for five years. The move was prompted by the results of an anti- dumping probe into the imports. Russia's SEVERSTAL METIZ and the Magnitogorsk iron & steel works (MMK), the rope's suppliers, although admitting to the dumping, asked the ministry to revise its decision, citing the set duty as protective. Between 2003 and 2005, the market share of Ukrainian rope makers shrank by 21.15%, from 84.76% to 63.61%. In the first eleven months of 2006, 26,200 tonnes of steel ropes, worth over $10 million, was sold in Ukraine.
