In 2007, the SEVERSTAL METIZ company targets capital expenditures of R712 million. The bulk will be injected into its Russian-based assets. The company's plant in Volgograd has started a decanter for sludge dehydration. The plant generates 240 cubic metres of sludge daily. The plant previously shipped its sludge in tank cars to sludge pits outside the city, where slime was dewatered through natural evaporation. The plant will now curtail its slime removal by sixfold, thereby saving about R5.0 million yearly.
